TRAILER: BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL 2

New E3 means new trailer for Beyond good and Evil 2!
Once again, I had the pleasure to create and shape the sound design of this trailer, a great challenge with high expectation from all the team.

There is the result after weeks of recording, sound design and mix:

One of my personal goal was to find and deliver an original sound texture kit for the small space ship. The only way to get enough variation and material to follow all the movements and speed effect was to build it from scratch.

I found it one night with my garage door combined with a weird speaker and a series of sines modulated at specific frequencies.

I am very happy of the final result, mostly due to a great collaboration between all the people involved on it.

Ubisoft has released a new title of the opus Ghost Recon: Willands.
It’s a tactical multiplayer shooter that takes place in the massive open world of Bolivia lands.

I have been involved to help the audio team by giving support to the talented cinematic team at Ubisoft Montpellier.

There is some selected examples of these cut-scenes where I have worked on, audio design, edit and mix:

TRAILER: BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL 2

Beyond good and evil 2 has been announced during last E3 at Los Angeles with a beautiful trailer made by Unit image and directed by Ubisoft Montpellier team.

I have been involded to create and shape the sound design of this footage, a great challenge with high expectation from all the team.

There is the result after weeks of recording, sound design and mix:

One of the biggest piece has been to create a retro sci-fi design for the vehicles sounds, somewhere between dirty thermic engine and futuristic ship. Considering the sustained action, from the beginning of the editing process, I was continuously keeping in mind to preserve a good dynamic and put the focus on one element at the time.

I am very happy of the final result, mostly due to a great collaboration between all the people involved on it.

Field recordings: Jordan

On the road again last summer for an unplanned trip to a new place, Jordan.

Amman2

Surrounded by 5 borders and 2 seas, this small country of the middle east reserves a lot of surprises to its visitors. I didn’t know what to expect before leaving, my first surprise was the warm welcome of all the citizens, very kind and always happy to help you.

From Amman, the capital to the south part of the country, I’ve drove 1600 Km through arid and hilly landscape during 10 days.

This country is full of beauty, but 3 places really impressed me:

-The dead sea which is the lowest dry point on earth, 400m below sea level. The salt has killed all the life around and draw a weird scenery, it is hard to make the distinction between the sky and the water due to the light reflection.

-Petra, the old capital of the Nabataean Kingdom.
It is composed of a lot of temples, houses and tombs distributed on a large area. All this constructions are carved directly into the rock, giving to this site a unique architecture.

Sounds of Jordan:

-The Wadi Rum desert surrounded by huge canyons of granite rock. The first words that came to my mind when I arrived there was: austerity and lifeless. That was a definitely a mistake, if you take a closer look and go into specific places that only Bedouins knows, you discover step by step a fragile and discreet wildlife.

.
Desert ambiances and camels:

An interesting point in Petra and Wadi Rum was the natural acoustics due to the topology, most of them are unique and extremely beautiful.

Recording sounds there was one more time a big challenge, the natural places are extremely silent and always windy, definitely not the best conditions for mics.

Considering these circumstances, I’m quite happy about the material I’ve managed to catch. To end this post, there is a sample of the most beautiful Muezzin I’ve ever heard, took at Amann from the top of a hill at 4am:

SOUND DRAMA: Salam alaykom

Short trip in Morocco just before summer, once again, during ramadan.

This journey started in the amazing city of Marrakech, through the small streets of the souk, part of the world heritage by UNESCO. Next step in the south Atlas mountain to find some fresh air next to the Toubkal, the highest peak of the country (4167m). Finally, the entry of the desert surrounded by beautiful and typical palm plantation in the region of Ouarzazate.

This trip was a great surprise, I was not expecting to be so out of place at only 3h of my country. I only took with me my handy recorder to make it “a bit easier”, such a mistake, never again!

Half-Life: Foxtrot Uniform

Half life foxtrot uniform has just been released!

For the last 2 months, I have worked on this new production from Benjamin Combes, an Half life fan live action movie.

The edit was a bit challenging, the direct sounds were not really exploitable, I had to post-produced almost everything.
In this kind of situation you definitely realize how valuable is a foley artist!

It’s was a pleasure to work on this production, just one regret concerning the dubbing that couldn’t be done by professional actors in great condition.

Everybody involved in this short worked in his spare time, it’s always hard to find time and enough resources in this kind of situation.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun working on this movie!
Cheers.

Sound Design: Audiosculpt research

Capture d’écran 2015-09-29 à 22.40.05Audiosculpt is a software developed by IRCAM in Paris which contains two majors processing kernel:

– SuperVP, an extended phase vocoder
– Pm2, a sinusoidale model analyser

Capture d’écran 2015-09-29 à 23.02.56

It opens a wide panel of treatment and analyse with an original approach, sculpts any sound from a sonogram (FFT) and his spectrum.

There is a long list of analyses and treatments that can be combined, merged,…

It takes time to be comfortable with and requires a bit of perseverance, but then, it may become your “must have” tool to create original textures.

There is some example of material I created in the past years with this software:
